Lamborghini Jalpa

Improvements / Replacements

by Nikki Sullivan

The following parts are useable in the Lamborghini 3.5 V8 engine:
Main bearing - Fiat 901073, Federal 4282M.
Note: The bearing width must be machined to match the Jalpa bearings.
Rod bearings - Fiat 7597964, Federal F466580RA or 460985RA.
Note: The bearing width must be machined to match the Jalpa bearings.
Oil pump roller bushing (2) - INA HK2012
Cam bearings - Federal 1220M (4 sets), Federal 1146 (4 sets).
Note: The heads must be bored to fit the bearings. The cam must also be ground to fit the bearings. This is a major job, but is the only solution to cam bores worn oversize.
Wrist pin bushings (the original rods have none) - Federal 4-66764Y

Oil seals:
These are all Viton construction
crankshaft (flywheel end) CR35412
crankshaft (balancer end) CR19606
countershaft (drives water pump & distributor) CR11611
accessory drive sprocket (drives countershaft) CR12746
Transmission input shaft CR9730
Oil pump drive shaft CR7740
Note: the original pump has none. The cover must be bored to accept the seal. This will reduce pump leakage and increase oil pressure.

"O" rings:
These are all Viton construction
cam chain cover to head V3X58mm
cam chain cover to head vent 204-017
cam chain cover to block-oil inlet 204-030
cam chain cover to block-oil outlet 207-22
cam chain cover to block-vent 207-017
oil pickup to block V3X23
oil outlet tube to block-inlet end V3X20
oil outlet tube to block-outlet end V3X20
intake to head 206-342
oil filter adapter to block 03-02-020
water fitting to head 206-323
water tube to pump 4X70mm
Shocks - Monroe 83995.
Note: the thread must be cut off of the end and the rod must be drilled & tapped 14mm. Then a cap screw must be used to hold it to the body. A 13MM thick spacer must be placed in the tube under the shock.

Clutch disc - Sachs 1861-561-002 Note: This disc is also used on the BMW M5.
Distributor cap - Bosch 1235-522-200
Alternator - Nippendenso 13325. (carquest AMP21452)
Note: the pulley must be used from the original alternator. This unit is used on the 1990 - 1992 Honda accord. It is a direct replacement for the Marelli.
Clutch slave cylinder - Carquest EW106046
Timing belt - Goodyear 345l100
Valves - intake - Manley special 11660 1.710 head, 4.550 OAL, .135 tip.
Valves - exhaust - Manley special 11663 1.490 head, 4.500 OAL, .085 tip.
Valve oil seals - PC 122-1089
CV joint boot - Ferrari 95860404
Oil filter - Purolator L30260

The following modifications should be made to make the vehicle reliable:

  1. The engine carriage to frame mounts are to thin allowing the bolts to pull thru. They should be replaced with thicker steel.
  2. Oil cooler hoses should be replaced with 16mm metal tubing. The bottom one is close to the header. It hardens, cracks, then sprays oil on the header causing a fire.
  3. Move the fuel pump to the trunk. Replace the filter with a new style. They are close to the header. the lines harden and crack or the fittings come out of the filter spraying fuel on the header causing a fire.
  4. The connecting rods have imperfections on the surface causing fatigue cracks. They should be polished.
  5. Add wrist pin bushings to rods.
  6. Replace original Buna-n oil seals with Viton.
  7. Machine a keyway in the camshaft and accessory drive sprocket joint. The original drive pin is inadequate and will shear.
  8. Install threaded inserts in all locations in the engine. The aluminum strips out. This is particularly necessary in the valve cover to head joint and the header studs.
  9. weld washers to reinforce the engine to carriage mounts. The original metal is too thin allowing the engine mount bolts to wear the holes
  10. Add a seal to the oil pump drive shaft to reduce leakage.
  11. Add filter screens under the metering orifices between the block and the head. These control oil to the cams. The are prone to plugging and causing oil starvation at the cams. Screens that can be trimmed to size can be found in kitchen faucet aeration units.
  12. Add a vent fitting to the radiator. Solder a brass coupling to the radiator top then drill a hole in the radiator shroud to allow access to it. This is necessary to expel all of the air from the cooling system. Trapped air will prevent water circulation and cause overheating.
  13. Add an MSD or equivalent rev limiter. The original distributor device does not work well.
  14. Make a larger heat shield to protect the long side inner CV boot from the header.
